What would you say to anyone thinking of joining UFCW 1518?

“One of the biggest benefits is when you get employed and join a union there is a lot more job security and overall security knowing there is help and lots of resources available to you.”

How has the union helped you personally?

“Personally, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge on how the union works and the relationship that it has with the compnay. Being a part of a union has allowed me to get to know more about what happens behind the scenes and how things are going.”

What is the biggest change in a union?

“The benefits of being part of a union are job security and the good package of benefits we’ve earned. We are also treated more fairly at work without being picked on, disciplined or singled out.”

What our Members Say: Ashad Ali

Ashad Ali

Name: Ashad Ali
Occupation: Pharmacy Technician

Originally from Fiji, my mom and I migrated to Canada in 1991 after the tragic death of my father. I have worked for Safeway as a pharmacy technician for the past 10 years, and over this time the union has supported me and helped me maintain my job.

It wasn’t until later on that I realized what being part of a union really stood for and what it meant to an ordinary union member.

The union helped every time I got into trouble for standing my ground against aggressive and unnecessarily demanding management who would use all the tricks in the book to intimidate me.

Today, at the age of 31, I am enjoying my 10th year of employment at Safeway and believe the union plays an important role for our survival in an industry where financial gain sometimes tends to exploit humanity. Whenever needed, the union is willing and ready to fight for their members’ rights in the workplace.

Some of the advantages of being part of the union are job security, better wages, and 90 per cent dental and medical coverage for not only me, but my wife Eden and two-month-old son Arzan.

When I first started working for Safeway I was only being paid $13 an hour but after bargaining and negotiations the union helped us receive steady wage increases over the past few years. Today, I get paid $18 an hour.

I am grateful for all the support I’ve received from the union. These years of experience have led me to realize how helpful and supportive the union is to its members and they ensure our rights are respected in the face of overzealous employers

Petition to End the Wage Freeze at BC Shoppers Drug Marts

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Whereas:

  • We’ve made Shoppers one of the most profitable corporations in Canada and sales were up last year

  • Shoppers CEO Jurgen Schreiber took in $4,377,672 during the same time we took a wage freeze as part of the Infinity program

  • It is unfair that Shoppers Drug Mart continues to cut hours and freeze wages at the stores in British Columbia without a union

I support the campaign to lift the wage freeze

What can Unions in BC offer Workers?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Why do workers join unions in BC like UFCW 1518?

  • To improve job security
  • To make sure your workplace is safe
  • To guarantee equal pay for equal work
  • To ensure fair wages and benefits
  • To gain dignity and respect at the workplace.

In today’s economy people need job security. One of the most common reasons workers start a union in BC is to make sure they aren’t unfairly disciplined just because their boss is in a bad mood.

One of the major advantages of joining a union in BC is that your rights and working conditions are outlined in a collective agreement (contract). The contract ensures that your rights are protected.

It’s well established that unionized employees in BC make more money than non unionized workers in the same job classification: but did you know that workers who join a union also get more hours?

According to Statistics Canada, part time workers that are unionized earn almost twice what they would make if they weren’t in a union like UFCW.

One Small Change that Would Make Scheduling Better at Walmart

Monday, March 8th, 2010

With or without a union, Walmart associates deserve to get their scheduling weeks in advance like retail workers in a union.

With some minor changes, and a commitment to respecting associates’ scheduling, Walmart can ensure you know when you are working and you feel relieved that it is not going to change at the last minute!

1.  Plan your life

If you know your schedule by noon on the Friday, for the 2nd week thereafter, you are able to schedule appointments, arrange child care, and simply plan your life.

2.  Prepare for work

When you know that your schedule will not change at the last minute, you are less stressed, ready for work, and not busy cancelling other obligations.

3.  Enjoy your free time

Oh yeah, between everything else, knowing your schedule is set, you can also enjoy and maximize your free time!

Join a Union to Get Better Pay: The Facts

Sunday, March 7th, 2010
I just found this report from Statistics Canada today. Thought people would find it interesting.
The most recent figures show that workers than join a union make 22% more money on average.
The average unionized worker was paid $24.47 an hour while the average nonunion worker earned only $19.89.
Part-time union workers averaged $20.79 but non-union part-timers earned dramatically lower pay of $13.16 hourly.

Most people join a union to get respect and fairness, but better pay isn’t a bad thing either.

Joining a Union in BC is Your Right

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Workers have found that the only effective way to meet the power held by employers and supervisors is to act together. This collective action is most often expressed by joining a union.

British Columbia Labour Laws ensure every worker has the right to join a union. Your employer can’t prevent you from joining a union or make threats if you join a union.

There are many reasons why workers join unions, and it varies from individual to individual, but usually it is about fairness, respect, better pay and having a voice at work. In BC, if the majority of a company’s employees indicate they want to join a union, then they are protected by law.

The first step in joining a union is showing the labour board there is interest in having a vote at your workplace. The labour board wants some workers to show they are interested in joining before they hold a vote. This is done through union cards. These cards are confidential. Your employer sees the cards and never knows who has signed a card

In British Columbia, if over 45% of workers sign a union card, the labour board will order a secret ballot vote to be held. The vote is similar to a provincial election. No one will ever know how you voted. If a majority of workers vote yes to joining UFCW 1518 then you will have a union at your workplace.

Mid-Level Managers at Walmart Deserve Pay that Reflects their Responsibilities

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Throughout the retail sector, senior-clerks and mid level management are on the front lines working with customers and new clerks, and also work with senior management behind the scenes.

Walmart has the opportunity to lead the sector by providing increased wages that respect the difficulty that comes with Mid-level management titles.

A pay ladder for employees that have earned these positions will help create sustainable long term careers at Walmart that can be a leading industry standard.

The large size and scale of these growing stores requires increased layers of senior and mid-management positions, and these workers deserve to be paid fairly for this work!

A pay ladder and proper training, that provides incentive for mid-level managers and senior clerks, instead of just a new title, will improve the quality throughout the stores!
